Student Life at GMS

GMS students and staff work together to create a positive and welcoming school culture where everyone is included and students feel safe to explore their interests and identities during these important transitional years. With strong academic and mental health supports in place, students feel empowered to develop their leadership and social skills and pursue their passions.

Clubs and Activities

There’s more to life than homework! Some of our popular GMS clubs and activities include:

  • Student Council: Open to students in all grade levels with each advisory electing a representative. The Student Council works on a number of projects involving fundraising and building school spirit.
  • WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) Leaders are a group of 8th graders who organize and run 6th Grade Orientation, as well as carry out various community-minded projects throughout the year. WEB Leaders are trained in Peer Mediation and work cooperatively to resolve conflicts between other students. WEB is a co-curricular option for 8th graders who are interested in growing their own leadership skills, as well as contributing to the culture of Gateway.
  • GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance): Gateway’s GSA meets at lunch on Wednesday and is always open to new members. GSA members work to support success for LGBTQ students on campus through activities such as teaching lessons to Advisory classes, holding fundraisers, and being a supportive community

In addition, twice per month, Gateway students participate in Advisory Clubs, which provide additional extra-curricular options while also bringing students together across grades. Advisory Clubs vary from semester to semester based on staff and student interests such as newspaper, guitar or arts & crafts. Students rank their preferences and participate in a different club each semester.

Student Support and Mental Health

Need help with a social conflict, planning for the future, or just need a quiet place to decompress for a few minutes? The Gateway Middle School Student Support Office is open from 8:10 AM -4:00 PM every school day. The SSO is available to student drop-in before and after school, as well as during lunch. Students may also access SSO services during the school day by asking for passes from their teachers. SSO staff can connect students with peer mediators, community resources, help plan for the transition to high school, and more.

We know that the middle school years bring a lot of changes with them, and sometimes new stressors as well, so supporting students’ mental health is a top priority at GMS. Counseling, both formal and informal, is offered by our licensed MFT Counselor and supported by current university interns. Students can reach out for support directly or may be referred by parents or teachers.
