After School Care

Safe Spaces for Enrichment Learning

Gateway strongly supports student enrichment activities that extend beyond the traditional school day, and we know after-school programs are top priority for many parents. We have two great options available to GMS families.

Buchanan YMCA-Gateway After School Program

Buchanan YMCA-Gateway After School Program

Beginning in 2013-14, Gateway Middle School established a partnership with the Buchanan YMCA to offer an on-site, comprehensive after school program. Gateway’s staff works closely with the Buchanan YMCA Site Director to align the program with our school goals and values and to ensure a strong connection between our school-day academic programs and the after school program.

The after school program at Gateway Middle focuses on academic support, youth leadership, enrichment activities and skill-building.

Program Information:

Program Goals, Activities, and Schedule

Program design is based on the varying needs and interests of middle school students. Academic and homework support time is provided each day to support academic success. Enrichment activities that foster skill building and leadership development will be based on youth choice and will be offered in (5) 6-7 week sessions, giving students the opportunity to try different activities throughout the programmatic year.

Youth have the option of attending program 3 days per week or 5 days per week.

Program Hours of Operation

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 3:30-6:00pm
Wednesday: 2:00-6:00pm

The YMCA provides on-site programming five days per week, from 3:30-6:00pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and from 2:00-6:00pm on Wednesdays (early release day).

Families have the option of enrolling their child in a 3-Day Program, or 5-Day Program.

Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco

Gateway Middle and High Schools are two of only five school-based Boys & Girls Clubs sites in San Francisco, enabling our students to benefit from not only after-school opportunities, but extra support throughout the school day as well. On our campuses you’ll find BGCSF staff helping with everything from leading high school tutoring sessions to organizing games during middle school recess.  School-Based Clubs merge out-of-school time with the school day, allowing positive, caring adults from both the school and BGCSF to provide wrap-around support that is consistent and meets youth where they are.

After school, Gateway Middle School BGCSF club members access van transportation to the neighboring Don Fisher Clubhouse or  Columbia Park Clubhouse, where they participate in the Aquatics Program, join sports leagues, sign up for specialized programs in visual and performing arts spaces, or join leadership and workforce development programs.
