During his Commencement Address to the Gateway High School Class of 2015, math teacher, Mr. Rick Aidi, described how his students have taught him so much over the last four years. One student in particular, Duncan Alexander, proved to him that "no matter how bleak one's circumstances are, the right attitude can work miracles."
Duncan is part of the foster care system, which has led to many transitions and uncertainty during his years in school. Despite many challenges throughout his life, Duncan remains extremely positive, committed to giving back to others, and grateful for the support that Gateway has provided him.
"When I was having emotional difficulties, the teachers were really supportive and provided me with a safe space to talk and clear my head," said Duncan.
During his senior year at Gateway, Duncan took Mr. Aidi's Business Math class and was inspired to pursue a career in finance and management. "Mr. Aidi believed in me and encouraged me to follow my interest and skills in mathematics," he said.
Last fall, Duncan participated in an internship with ValueAct Capital through Gateway's Internship Program. "I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to intern at ValueAct Capital through Gateway because it was a totally new type of experience for me. I was able to experience the inner workings of a prestigious venture capital firm and build connections with role models," said Duncan.
At graduation on May 30, Duncan was awarded Gateway High School's 2015 Service to Community Award. The Service to Community Award is presented to a graduating senior who has contributed the most to the community, as well as setting a positive example for others.
Duncan will attend Menlo College in the fall, a small, private college in Silicon Valley that focuses on business education.
